Black History Month

October marks the start of Black History Month in the UK, an occasion to recognise and celebrate the invaluable contributions of Black people to the British economy, culture, and history.

The story of Black communities has often been told through lenses that often misrepresent, oversimplify, or entirely overlook the rich and diverse experiences of those who lived it. Under the national theme of 'Reclaiming Narratives', the BHM are urging us all to take control of our stories, celebrate our heritage, and ensure voices are heard.

Many churches across the UK are marking this special month, including the Guildford Diocese who have produced a series of short films to kick off Black History Month - celebrating diversity in the church and in our diocese.  These video’s are available to view here .

The Church of England have published this beautiful prayer to help promote equality and celebrate diversity in our congregations and beyond. Their web site also offers a catalogue of resources, events and exhibitions to help mark the month:

Compassionate God,
who sent Jesus Christ to deliver us from all manner of injustices and inequalities,
create in us new hearts and enlarged visions,
to see the image of God in every person
irrespective of background, race and ethnicity.

May we be generous in our love of others
as we work towards ending racism and injustice;
creating communities of human flourishing,
through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever

Amen.
