Caring for Creation in your Garden
It’s April, winter is behind us and spring is here which means EVERYTHING is growing in the garden. But what does this really mean? New flowers, plants, seeds, food, life, colour, scent… Gardens full of insects, birds, nectar, furry creatures, things that slither, moths, frogs, butterflies.
What a 'cool' time it is to just wonder and celebrate Gods bright, bountiful, beautiful, buzzing creation.
So, if we have a garden lets take a little time to look after it and enjoy what it gives us. Let's lock up the weed killer, bin the Astro turf and dump the junk. We could stop cutting either all or some of our grass and join 'No Mow May'. Since the 1930s we have lost 97% of our flower rich meadows in the UK which are vital habitats for our pollinators such as bees and butterflies. Holding back on mowing will allow these grasses and wildflowers to flourish and in turn encourage the pollinators to take up residence.
You may have seen a blue sign like this possibly made by the Men's Shed in Dorking on a neighbour's lawn, or on a grass verge showing that the grass is going to be allowed to grow for the pollinators.
You can also encourage pollinators by planting bee and butterfly friendly plants in your garden such as buddleia, as well as providing a source of water for them to drink from.
Enjoy Springtime by visiting St Giles church yard where you can see beautiful spring flowers such as primroses and remember to care for God’s creation in your own garden.
