Godparent’s Day: Celebrating a Special Calling
Observed on the third Sunday of each July, Godparents' Day is an opportunity to celebrate and thank the godparents who play such an important role in the lives of their godchildren.
Being a godparent is far more than an honorary title. At a child's baptism, godparents make promises before God and the congregation to support the child in their Christian faith. They are called to pray for their godchild, encourage them in their spiritual journey and be positive role models through their words and actions.
While the baptism service may last only a short time, the commitment of a godparent is intended to last a lifetime. Whether through regular prayer, celebrating baptism anniversaries, attending important milestones, or simply being a trusted and caring presence, godparents help children grow in faith and confidence.
Godparents' Day also serves as a gentle reminder to those who have accepted this responsibility. It is a chance to reflect: Do I pray for my godchild? Am I encouraging them in their faith? Am I setting a Christian example through my own life?
As a church family, we give thanks for all godparents who faithfully fulfil this special calling. Their support, encouragement and prayers can make a lasting difference in the lives of the children entrusted to their care.
