Thy Kingdom Come
As a church, we’re invited to participate in Thy Kingdom Come (TKC) from May 21-31. Begun by Archbishops of Canterbury and York in 2016, TKC is a global prayer movement that invites Christians around the world to pray during the 11 days from Ascension to Pentecost for more people to come to know Jesus. After the first Ascension Day the disciples gathered with Mary, devoting themselves to prayer while they waited for the outpouring of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. Like them, our reliance on the gift of the Holy Spirit is total – on our own we can do nothing. God has grown TKC from a dream of possibility into a movement. In 2019, Christians from 172 countries took part in praying ‘Come Holy Spirit’, so that friends and family, neighbours and colleagues might come to faith in Jesus Christ.
During TKC, it is hoped that everyone who takes part will: deepen their own relationship with Jesus Christ; pray for 5 friends or family to come to faith in Jesus and/or 5 people who you care for; pray for the empowerment of the Spirit that we would be effective in our witness. As a church, we have participated in TKC since it started. I hope you may have seen fruit borne from your prayers offered during those times. We are keen to do so again this year. Understandably it will be different as it is unlikely that we’ll be able to meet physically and planned events in the Diocese have been cancelled. However, we can still all pray – perhaps more than ever as in some ways we may have less distractions and busyness in our lives than in normal times!
We would like to encourage everyone to:
Pray specifically for 5 people to come to know Jesus and/or for 5 people that you care for
Commit to pray at a set time each day for the 11 days of TKC
Sign up for a slot for our virtual 24/3 day prayer event during TKC (May 28-30) Attend the online Diocesan Beacon event on Sunday 31 May at 6pm
Engage with the digital prayer resources available for all ages on the TKC website
Further details about the Diocesan Beacon event and how to sign up and participate in our virtual 24/3 prayer will be sent out nearer the start of TKC. I have a sense that this could be the most powerful and transforming TKC yet and hope we may all take this opportunity to pray ‘Thy Kingdom Come’ and see God move.
