Remembering Ashtead’s Fallen

8 May will mark the 80th anniversary of VE Day (Victory in Europe Day). It is an opportunity for the nation to come together to honour and pay tribute to the Second World War generation from across the UK and Commonwealth.

There are 16 Commonwealth War Graves scattered throughout our churchyard at St Giles’ Church, which commemorate members of the Commonwealth forces who died in the First and Second World Wars. Full details can be found online at https://www.cwgc.org. A map of the grave locations is also available here – or a leaflet is available on site for you to explore and pay tribute to on VE Day.

You may also like to pay a visit to the Ashtead War Memorial located just outside St George’s Church. The tapered plinth lists all the names of Ashtead’s fallen from WW1 and the raised marble tablet at the base lists those fallen in WW2.

Full details of local and national events commemorating the VE Day Anniversary can be found at ve-vjday80.gov.uk/events
