The Power of Community
Galatians 6:2: "Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfil the law of Christ."
Mental Health Awareness Week UK is a time for us all to focus on the importance of mental well-being and to break the stigma surrounding mental health issues. Taking place this year from Monday 12 – Sunday 18 May, and created by the charity Mental Health UK, the week long event celebrates the power of community to help us all navigate life’s challenges. It reminds us that we are not alone in our daily struggles.
Being part of a supportive community is vital for mental health. Hebrews 10:24-25 urges us to "consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another." Fellowship with others provides encouragement and a sense of belonging.
“Multiple studies have shown that nurturing meaningful relationships and feeling a sense of connection goes beyond the benefits of mutual support; it has real physiological effects on our physical and psychological health and resilience, perhaps even strengthening our immune system and increasing longevity.”
A church has a ready-made network of communities, that can be utilised by many for well-being support. Outside of the Sunday services, you can find a warm welcome from a variety of groups. Here in Ashtead Parish alone you can access Oasis – a women’s social group meeting regularly for coffee, conversation and cake; The Churches Together Men’s Breakfast operates each month; plus there are the Evergreen meetings for local seniors in our community. Last month Mental Health UK published a blog exploring why community is important to mental health, stating ‘Multiple studies have shown that nurturing meaningful relationships and feeling a sense of connection goes beyond the benefits of mutual support; it has real physiological effects on our physical and psychological health and resilience, perhaps even strengthening our immune system and increasing longevity.’ Read the full article here to discover more practical ways to cultivate community connections here.
So, as we celebrate Mental Health Awareness Week, let's all make a conscious effort to care for our own mental health and support those around us in each community we are a part of.
