UICC Campaign for People-Centred Cancer Care

The Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) has launched a new global campaign, "United by Unique," aimed at fundamentally shifting cancer care towards a people-centred approach. The campaign, which will run from 2025 to 2027, emphasises the importance of recognising and addressing the unique needs, perspectives, and stories of individuals affected by cancer.

World Cancer Day, observed annually on February 4th, will mark the official start of the campaign. The UICC calls for a holistic approach to cancer care that places individuals, families, and communities at the heart of health systems. This means moving beyond just treating the disease and focusing on the overall well-being of patients.

People-centred care includes initiatives such as community health programmes tailored to local health issues, patient navigation programmes and the engagement of people who have experienced cancer to shape policies. This approach leads to improved patient well-being, and higher quality care and increased trust in healthcare providers. It boosts satisfaction among patients and families, while improving health equity and the overall effectiveness of healthcare systems.

The campaign encourages people to share their personal cancer stories through writing, artwork, or videos, highlighting the diverse experiences and challenges faced by those affected by cancer. By doing so, the UICC aims to raise awareness, improve outcomes, and ultimately save lives.

The "United by Unique" campaign seeks to inspire meaningful and lasting action by showing that everyone has a role to play in improving cancer care and reducing the global cancer burden. If you have a story to share or would like to find out how you can support those affected by cancer in your community visit the UICC web site.
