Disability Sunday: One Body, Many Parts

As the Church of England celebrate Disability Awareness Sunday this weekend, I want to reflect on a simple but powerful truth: God's Church is strongest when everyone is welcomed, valued and able to participate fully in its life. This year's theme from Through the Roof, "One Body, Many Parts", reminds us that each person has unique gifts and an important place within God's family.

I firmly believe that our church is richer when people of all abilities are included. By raising awareness of both practical and pastoral needs, we can help ensure that everyone has the opportunity to belong, serve and grow in faith.

Earlier this year, many of you will remember the video we shared highlighting hidden disabilities, hearing needs and physical accessibility. It has been encouraging to hear more conversations taking place about the different ways we experience church life and how we can support one another. After all, every person is made in the image of God, and a church that includes all people is a church that honours Him.

I have also been encouraged by some of the positive developments across our sites, including repairs to disabled parking spaces, newly painted accessibility markings and the installation of an accessible toilet at St George's. I am also grateful that our talks continue to be uploaded online each week, helping those unable to attend in person to remain connected to our church family.

I volunteer with Through the Roof, one of our Mission Partners, and have been privileged to meet and learn from Christians from around the country and across the world who champion disability inclusion in their churches. Known as "Roofbreakers", we take our inspiration from the friends in Luke 5 who went to extraordinary lengths to bring a man to Jesus by lowering him through a roof. Their determination challenges us to think creatively about how we can help remove barriers so that everyone has the opportunity to encounter Christ.

As we celebrate Disability Sunday, let us remember that we are one body with many parts (1 Corinthians 12). We are united, needed and honoured. My prayer is that we will continue listening, learning and raising awareness so that barriers are removed and everyone has the opportunity to encounter Jesus and flourish as part of His Church.
