Joy Without Waste
Christmas is a time of joy, but it’s also a chance to care for God’s creation. Here are 10 practical ways to celebrate sustainably:
Thoughtful Gifts – Choose items that last, handmade treasures, or give experiences instead of “stuff.”
Shop Smart – Support local businesses or buy pre-loved items from charity shops and resale sites.
Eco cards and Wrapping – Use recyclable paper, fabric wraps or reusable gift bags. Avoid glitter and foil which make the whole lot landfill. You could also consider sending e-cards to cut down on waste.
Trees – Rent or buy potted trees that can be replanted. If you have an artificial tree, keep using it for years.
Decorations – Make natural ones (dried oranges, pinecones, cardboard crafts) or reuse what you already own.
Crackers & Fun – Try DIY crackers or swap them for games, quizzes, or shared jokes at the table.
Lights – Use LED bulbs and switch them off overnight to save energy.
Food – Plan portions carefully, use leftovers creatively and consider more plant-based dishes.
Travel – If visiting family, consider carpooling, public transport or offsetting travel emissions.
Celebrate Together – Worship, sing carols and enjoy fellowship. Community joy is the most sustainable gift.
