Poverty Sunday 2026: Food, Faith & Fellowship

On Sunday 18 October, churches across the UK will mark Poverty Sunday, held each year on the Sunday closest to the UN International Day for the Eradication of Poverty. This year's theme, “Food, Faith & Fellowship,” encourages churches to give, act and pray together as we seek a society where everyone can flourish, free from poverty.

For Christians, concern for those facing poverty is not simply an act of charity but a response to God's call. In Acts 2:42-47, the early Church shared their resources, cared for one another's needs, and built a community where nobody was left behind. It remains a powerful picture of faith put into action.

Here in our own community, we are grateful for the work of three organisations that help address poverty and its effects. Our mission partner CAP (Christians Against Poverty) supports people trapped in debt and financial hardship. Leatherhead START helps local families and individuals facing a range of challenges, including poverty and isolation. The Besom connects people who want to help with those who are experiencing practical need. Together, these ministries reflect something of God's heart for justice, compassion and human dignity.

As we mark Poverty Sunday, perhaps we can each take time to pray, give, volunteer or simply notice those around us who may be struggling. Through food, faith and fellowship, we can play our part in building communities where everyone is welcomed, valued and supported.
