Modern Slavery: A Hidden Crime in Our Community

Anti-Slavery Day, observed annually on 18th October, provides a vital opportunity to raise awareness of human trafficking and modern slavery. It encourages governments, local authorities, companies, charities and individuals to take meaningful action against this devastating crime.

Modern slavery affects nearly 50 million people worldwide—men, women and children exploited for personal or commercial gain. It’s a high-profit, low-risk crime built on deception, coercion and lies. And it’s not just happening far away—it’s happening right here.

Surrey currently reports the highest number of human trafficking cases in the UK. Crimes such as labour exploitation, sexual exploitation, domestic servitude, county lines drug trafficking and even organ harvesting are taking place in our towns and villages!

The Clewer Initiative is the Church of England’s response to modern slavery, equipping churches and communities to raise awareness and take action. We are called to be vigilant, prayerful and proactive.

As Bishop Alastair Redfern, Chair of the Clewer Initiative, reminds us:

“We believe that the tools to end Modern Slavery exist within the local community and that the Church… has a primary responsibility in leading these efforts.”
