World Development Information Day: Sharing Knowledge, Changing Lives

On 24 October each year, World Development Information Day reminds us of the power of knowledge to transform lives. Established by the United Nations in 1972, the day encourages the sharing of ideas and information to address some of the world's greatest challenges, including poverty, inequality, sustainability and barriers to education.

In today's interconnected world, access to trustworthy information is increasingly important. Yet millions of people still lack the resources and opportunities needed to thrive. This year's theme highlights a simple but powerful truth: accessible and reliable information is not merely a privilege, but a vital tool for reducing inequality, promoting sustainable development and empowering people to make informed decisions about their future.

As Christians, this message resonates deeply with our faith. We believe that every person is made in the image of God and deserves the opportunity to flourish. Jesus spoke of bringing good news to the poor, freedom to the oppressed and hope to those in need. Our vision is not simply the absence of poverty, but the presence of abundant life for all.

This connects closely with one of our own core values, Compassionate Mission. Compassion calls us to recognise need, while mission moves us to practical action. Whether supporting local families, partnering with global charities or sharing our own knowledge and resources, we are called to be agents of God's love and transformation.

As followers of Christ, let’s be encouraged to use what we know, share what we have and help build a more just, informed and hopeful world where all people can live life in all its fullness.

"Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven." (Matthew 5:16)
