Building Community 5: Giving
Theme: Giving
Passages: 2 Corinthians 9:6–11 | Acts 2:42–45 | Matthew 6:19–21 (brief)
Welcome & Context
This week we’re continuing our series on Building Community by looking at giving — not just financially, but the whole posture of generosity. Paul challenges the Corinthian church to give freely, cheerfully, and with trust, not under pressure or control. And in Acts 2 we see a vision of radical generosity at the heart of the early church — a community sharing everything in common.
You also heard from me (Sarah) about Live Aid — a real-world moment where compassion moved people to give freely — and a video that changed hearts more than any speech ever could.
Opening Song (optional)
Suggested song: I Surrender – Hillsong Worship
(or something that expresses freedom, release, or trust)

Discussion Questions
1. What stood out to you in either Tom or Sarah’s Sunday’s sermon — a phrase, image or example?
2. Paul says, “Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion…” — why do you think he says that? What difference does it make?
3. Can you think of a time when you gave something — time, money, energy — freely and joyfully? How did that feel compared to a time you gave reluctantly or out of duty?
4. How does radical generosity build trust — in God and in each other?
5. Acts 2 paints a picture of a church community where possessions were shared and needs met. How might that vision look in our church today?
6. What are some of the areas where we’re tempted to stay in control — and what might “open hands” look like instead?
7. If we could play a video of all the goodness we’ve received in Jesus — freedom, forgiveness, abundance, belonging — how might that change how we see giving?
Practical Prompt / Challenge
Take a moment this week to give something — not just money, but time, attention, kindness — freely, with no strings attached.
Ask God to show you what you’re holding onto too tightly — and try loosening your grip.
You might want to journal or pray about it during the week.
Prayer Time
Invite group members to share prayer needs, or use these prompts:
• For a deepening trust in God’s provision
• For open-handedness in every area of life
• For the church to be known for joyful generosity
• For those in need locally and globally — and how we might respond
