Growing in Christ: A New Set of Clothes
Colossians 3: 12-14
1. Icebreaker: feel free to share any memorable examples of some old item(s) of clothing you discarded, what made you discard them?
Read Colossians 3:12-14
2. In v12 Paul focuses on God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved. How does that make you feel?
3. Why does Paul talk about clothing yourselves with the Christ-like qualities in verses 12-14. Is that a helpful metaphor?
4. Which of the v12 virtues (compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience) do you find easiest? Which do you find hardest?
5. When Paul is asking us to forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another, why does Paul in v13 mention the fact the Lord forgave you?
6. In what sense can love be like an outer garment that binds all the other virtues?
For further context perhaps read one or more of these verses: 1 Corinthians 13:13, Romans 13:8 and Galatians 5:6.
7. Optional reflective Christian song: The Compassion Hymn (Keith & Kristyn Getty) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fMR85VnEluM - as you listen to this reflect on the fact God has chosen each one of you and calls you to clothe yourselves with Christ-like virtues. Perhaps pick and reflect on 1 or 2 of the Christ-like qualities you want help putting on each day: compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, patience, forgiveness, love.
8. Going into the week what actions might you take to “put on love” for those in your family/friendship groups, work or community groups? Pray into these things.
