28/06 Growing in Christ: A Vision for Worship
Small Group Bible Study Notes
Colossians 3:15–17 — Living Under the Rule of Christ
Aim
To explore how Christ transforms the life of a Christian community through peace, gratitude, worship, and everyday obedience.
Icebreaker (5–10 minutes)
Q1) What is something that fills your mind during an ordinary week?
Q2) When have you experienced genuine peace in a difficult situation?
Read the Passage Together
Read Colossians 3:15–17 aloud.
Verse 15
"Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts..."
What does "rule" mean?
The Greek word literally means to act as an umpire or referee.
Christ's peace is to make the final decision when conflict, fear or uncertainty arises.
Discussion
Q3) What kinds of things compete to "rule" our hearts?
Q4) What does Christ's peace look like in everyday decisions?
Q5) Why does Paul connect peace with being "one body"?
"...and be thankful."
Notice how often gratitude appears:
verse 15
verse 16
verse 17
Three times in three verses.
Thankfulness is not an optional extra.
It is a mark of spiritual maturity.
Discussion
Q6) Why do you think gratitude is repeated so often?
Q7) How does gratitude change our perspective?
Verse 16
"Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly."
This means:
Know God's Word.
Read it together.
Discuss it.
Apply it.
Let it shape the church.
"Dwell richly" suggests abundance—not occasional contact with Scripture.
Discussion
Q8) What helps God's Word dwell richly in your life? What prevents it?
Teaching and Admonishing
Paul expects every believer to contribute.
Teaching explains truth.
Admonishing lovingly warns or encourages someone back toward Christ.
Discussion
Q9) How can ordinary Christians encourage one another with Scripture?
Singing
Paul mentions:
Psalms
Hymns
Spiritual songs
Music is more than expression.
It teaches theology.
It reminds us of truth.
It encourages the church together.
Discussion
Q10) Have you ever found that a worship song strengthened your faith during a difficult season?
Verse 17
"Whatever you do..."
This is one of the biggest statements in the New Testament.
Nothing lies outside Christ's authority.
Work. Family. Friendships. Conversations. Money. Church.
Everything belongs to Jesus.
Discussion
Q11) What would change if you consciously asked: "Can I do this in the name of the Lord Jesus?" before major decisions?
Q12) What has most struck you from today’s session? Pray about these things.
