7/12 Advent 2: Joseph’s Righteousness and Trust in God

Print Friendly and PDF

Theme: Surrendering to God’s plan even when life feels uncertain.

Opening Question

  • When have you faced a situation that seemed impossible or deeply disappointing? How did you respond?

Scripture Reading

Matthew 1:18–25

(Read aloud together.)

Observation

  • What details stand out to you in this passage?

  • How is Joseph described? What does “righteous” mean in this context?

  • What role does divine intervention play in Joseph’s decision?

Interpretation

1.       Joseph’s Dilemma

·         Betrothal in Jewish culture was legally binding—breaking it was serious.

·         Joseph had every right to expose Mary, yet he chose mercy over law.

·         How does this reflect the heart of God?

2.       Merciful Righteousness

·         Joseph’s righteousness wasn’t legalistic; it was compassionate. Compare this to Jesus’ teaching in Matthew 5:7 (“Blessed are the merciful”).

·         Could Joseph’s example have shaped Jesus’ understanding of mercy?

3.       Trust in God’s Plan

  • Joseph obeyed immediately after the dream.

  • What does this teach us about listening and responding to God?

Application

  • Personal Reflection:

Are there areas in your life where you need to surrender control and trust God’s plan?

  • Practical Step:

This week, create space for silence and prayer. Ask God to speak into your situation.

Discussion Questions

  1. Why do you think Joseph didn’t hesitate after the dream?

  2. How can we cultivate a heart like Joseph’s—merciful and obedient?

  3. What does this story teach us about God’s presence in messy, complicated situations?

Prayer

“Lord, help us to trust You as Joseph did. Teach us to choose mercy over judgment and obedience over fear. As we prepare for Advent, open our hearts to hear Your voice and follow Your will.”

Optional Activity

  • Advent Reflection:

Write down one area of your life where you need to surrender to God. Place it somewhere visible as a reminder during Advent.
