01/02 Journey to the Promised Land: Faith and Purpose
1) We can all sometimes be confused, sometimes with comic effect. Share any amusing stories of when you or others have got the wrong end of the stick….
Read Exodus 19:1-8
2) So far this term we have explored the calling of Moses and then how God rescued Israel. Why do you think the Israelites thought God had done all this?
3) But in verses 3-6 God reveals the true purpose behind his actions. What strikes you from these words? What does it tell us about God’s character and heart?
4) What did it mean for the Israelites to be a kingdom of priests? Who were their congregation? How would they minister to them?
Read 1 Peter 2:9-10
5) There are clear parallels with this New Testament passage. Was this God’s Plan B, after Plan A failed? Or do you think it was always God’s intention? What light does Genesis 12:1-3 shed?
6) How does it make you feel to know you are chosen and a treasured possession?
7) In what sense are we a royal priesthood? Is that a challenge to you?
8) How should we be fulfilling this? Who are our congregation and what is our message?
9) The Old Testament marks an era of centripetal mission, where the nations come to Israel. The New Testament is all about centrifugal mission, where Christians go out to the world. What are the implications for our purpose as a church?
10) How might God be calling you to play a bigger part in his mission? Support each other in praying into these things.
