Celebrating Care Day: An Invitation to Support Our Kingfishers
Care Day, observed every year on 15 February, is a wonderful reminder of the importance of kindness, empathy and compassion in our communities. It highlights how transformative it can be when we show care for one another—simple gestures that uplift, encourage and remind us that every person is valued. As Scripture teaches us, “Serve one another humbly in love” (Galatians 5:13). Care Day offers us a moment to reflect on what this looks like in practice.
Meet the Kingfishers at St George’s
If you’ve attended our 10.30am Sunday service, you may already have met our Kingfishers—adults with learning difficulties who bring joy, warmth and a wonderful sense of community to our worship life. Members of Kingfishers receive personalised support to help them participate fully in the service, such as large-print song and hymn sheets.
After the service, everyone gathers for conversation over coffee in the café—always a highlight of the morning!
A Special Time: Kingfishers Holiday Club
Each summer, we look forward to the Kingfishers Holiday Club—two and a half days filled with learning about God, trying out new skills, exploring the neighbourhood and sharing plenty of fun together. It’s a time of deep connection, growth and joy for all involved.
This year, Sandy Oliver will once again be leading the Holiday Club. She would warmly welcome the support of other church members to help make this special time possible. We’re looking for someone who:
Enjoys sharing activities with adults who have learning difficulties
Has experience sharing God’s word in ways that are accessible and engaging for Kingfishers
Can commit to the holiday club and occasional planning meetings
Care in Action
Care Day reminds us that acts of care—large or small—can profoundly shape lives. Whether it’s offering a listening ear, giving practical help or sharing a moment of encouragement, these gestures reflect God’s love in action.
As we mark 15 February, and throughout the year, let’s continue nurturing a culture of care in our church family and beyond. One caring gesture at a time, we can build a more compassionate and supportive community.
Could You Support the Kingfishers?
Perhaps this is the moment for you to consider becoming part of the Kingfishers team. Your care, presence and gifts could mean more than you imagine.
If you feel a gentle nudge—or would simply like to learn more—please do speak to Sandy Oliver or a member of the team. We would love to hear from you. Full details of the role can also be found HERE.
